Atomic

“Passion as a drive, innovation as a principle, performance as a mission”

How well does the Atomic philosophy align with the expedition philosophy of snowbuggy.nl !
The snowbuggy team is passionate about kite buggying and extreme sports, while the innovative snowbuggy is build for world record speed performance.

With the support from Atomic Snowboards, Snowbuggy.nl will install high performance snowboards on their snowbuggies. With these boards, the snowbuggy team is confident of having the best snowboards for high speed travel over the Greenland icecap.

Last week , the three members of the snowbuggy team visited the Atomic headquarters to meet with Atomic people and to take a photoshoot with Atomic’s Banger snowboard model.

The Dutch did it again ! (and created a kitebuggy paradise)

The Dutch have a rich history related to turning sea and lakes into land.

Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater
Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater

Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater (1575-1650) reclaimed land by using windmills to power water pumps, thereby emptying the lakes. (Leeghwater means “Empty water”).

Using wind power only, many of the former lakes in the province of North Holland were made accessible to the people and turned into fertile farming land.

The Zandmotor; new land to increase coastal protection

In the year 2012, the Dutch have completed another amazing land reclamation project, called the Zandmotor (Sand engine in English).

Because of the forecasted global warming and associated sea level rising, the Dutch government proposed an innovative method to better protect its coastline.
The Dutch coastline only consist of sand dunes and these are very vulnerable to storms and high tides.
The Zandmotor is a manmade island and consists of sand only. It is sized about 1×2 km. It is actually attached to the main land.

The purpose of this artificial island is that over the next 20 years, it will be washed away by wind and sea current, causing the sand to deposit along the existing coastline thereby giving increased protection to the hinterland.
This method of coastal protection, is, according the Dutch government, the cheapest method, but also offers a recreational purpose : the artificial island has now become a kite buggy paradise !

Snowbuggy’s team member Eric “MTwater”, a descendant of the famous Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater, immediately recognized the potential of this manmade land for kitebuggying.
Just a few days after to official opening of the Zandmotor to the public, Eric took his kitebuggy and had a great day out kitebugging on the Zandmotor!
He clocked a 50 km distance and a top speed of 64 km/hr with his Recon instrument GPS goggle.

Final details of the snowbuggy discussed.

During the last kitebuggy race weekend at Brouwersdam, two members of the snowbuggy team sat down with the guys from XXtreme.
XXtreme is the manufacturer of the snowbuggies.

The goal is to have the upgraded snowbuggy model (version 5) ready for field testing early January 2012.
The only thing to add is snow…even in Norway the weather is not bringing any snow yet !

Snowbuggy.nl is proud to present a ski goggle with direct to eye communication from its partner Recon Instruments

www.snowbuggy.nl received today a ski goggle from their partner Recon Instruments with a built in GPS display that in addition allows for smartphone control.

This goggle will be used during the Greenland snowbuggy expedition for accurate GPS navigation.
In the meantime, the expedition members of the snowbuggy team will use the goggle during national and international kitebuggy championship races.

Typically, kitebuggiers require goggles to protect their eyes when riding on sandy beaches and use handheld GPS devices for monitoring their speed and distance.
The Recon Direct to Eye Communication goggle combines these two requirements and also allows the control of a smartphone for playing music and making telephone calls.

This weekend, the goggle will be presented during the 3rd raceweekend of the Dutch BCH Kitebuggy Championship to be held at Brouwersdam. Races start each day at 10.00 hr.

Webmaster Mark van den Berg of www.snowbuggy.nl is, like the snowbuggy expedition members, an enthousiastic kitebuggier.

Mark studies Communication & Multimedia Design and in below article published in a university magazine, he explains how much he enjoys his hobby : the thrill of speed and being outdoor is what makes him checking local weather conditions frequently and make him forget about school.

With a 24th ranking at the latest European 2011 Kitebuggy championship at Hoylake, England, Mark currently holds the 4th position in the Dutch kitebuggy Master class and hopes this will be sufficient for qualification for the oncoming World Championship in Chereaux, France, june 2012.

This weekend, 19-20 November 2011, the complete snowbuggy team will be present at the 3rd race weekend of the Dutch BCH Kitebuggy champioship, to be held at Brouwersdam, starting each day at 10:00 hr.

Snowbuggy team complete !

We are proud to announce that Thijs van Olphen will be joining the Greenland 2013 snowbuggy expedition !

Thijs is an experienced winter explorer : in 1998, then aged 16, he crossed Greenland from East to West as the youngest Dutch person so far.

Over the last decade, Thijs visited Svalbard (Spitbergen in Dutch language) 10 times.

Thijs also crossed Baffin Island (North Canada) on skis in winter time.

Thijs will bring with him a solid background in polar survival techniques and expedition experience.

Thijs : welcome on board !

Snowbuggy.nl is proud to present snow saws from its partner YangFang snowsaws.

Last weekend, the snowbuggy team participated at the Dutch kitebuggy races and was pleased to present the snow saws from YangFang.

These saws will be used during the Greenland snowbuggy expedition in 2013 and during the oncoming winter training in Norway.

The saws are particularly useful for building igloos and erecting wind breakers made from snow blocks.

Snowbuggy team excels at Dutch kitebuggy races

During the weekend of 5-6 November 2011, snowbuggy team members Arjen van der Tol and Eric “MTwater” participated at the Dutch kitebuggy races held at the Brouwersdam in The Netherlands.
The races are organised by BCH (www.buggyclubholland.com).

Because Saturday was without any wind, the races were held only on the Sunday.
Sunday was a perfect day for the kitebuggy races : dry weather and perfect wind conditions.

With three heats raced, Arjen finished 2nd and Eric finished 3rd during the weekend.
